===================================================================== CERT-Renater Note d'Information No. 2009/VULN320 _____________________________________________________________________ DATE : 07/08/2009 HARDWARE PLATFORM(S) : / OPERATING SYSTEM(S) : Solaris, OpenSolaris running Solaris XScreenSaver. ====================================================================== http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-66-258928-1 ______________________________________________________________________ Solution Type Sun Alert Solution 258928 : A Security Vulnerability May Allow Popup Windows to Appear Through the Solaris XScreenSaver Program on Xorg(1) Servers Bug ID 6825374 Product Solaris 8 Operating System Solaris 9 Operating System Solaris 10 Operating System OpenSolaris Date of Resolved Release 05-Aug-2009 SA Document Body A Security Vulnerability May Allow Popup Windows to Appear Through the Solaris XScreenSaver Program on Xorg(1) Servers 1. Impact A security vulnerability in the Solaris XScreenSaver (see xscreensaver(1)) program may allow popup windows to appear through the lock screen and expose sensitive data on Xorg(1) servers (or Xnewt(1M) servers in the case of Sun Ray setups). 2. Contributing Factors This issue can occur in the following releases: SPARC Platform * X11 6.4.1 (for Solaris 8) without patch 115298-02 * Solaris 9 without patch 115158-11 * Solaris 10 without patch 120094-23 * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_01 through snv_119 x86 Platform * X11 6.4.1 (for Solaris 8) without patch 115299-02 * Solaris 9 without patch 115159-11 * Solaris 10 without patch 120095-23 * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_01 through snv_119 OpenSolaris distributions may include additional bug fixes above and beyond the build from which it was derived. The base build can be derived as follows: $ uname -v snv_119 Notes: 1. This issue only occurs when the XScreenSaver program is used with the Xorg server (or derivatives such as Xnewt(1M) from the Sun Ray software), however, this includes the scenario where the Xorg server is used remotely, therefore releases such as Solaris 8 and 9 which do not include the Xorg server may still be impacted if they are used remotely to connect to another host that does contain the Xorg server. To determine if the system is running Xorg, the following command can be run: $ ps -ef | grep Xorg 2. Systems are only impacted by this issue if they have the package SUNWxwsvr installed. To determine if SUNWxwsvr is installed, the following command can be run: $ pkginfo SUNWxwsvr system SUNWxwsvr XScreenSaver 3. Symptoms There are no predictable symptoms that would indicate the described vulnerability has been exploited to reveal sensitive information. 4. Workaround There is no workaround for this issue. Please see the Resolution section below. 5. Resolution This issue is addressed in the following releases: SPARC Platform * X11 6.4.1 (for Solaris 8) with patch 115298-02 or later * Solaris 9 with patch 115158-11 or later * Solaris 10 with patch 120094-23 or later * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_120 or later x86 Platform * X11 6.4.1 (for Solaris 8) with patch 115299-02 or later * Solaris 9 with patch 115159-11 or later * Solaris 10 with patch 120095-23 or later * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_120 or later For more information on Security Sun Alerts, see Technical Instruction ID 213557.
