===================================================================== CERT-Renater Note d'Information No. 2009/VULN245 _____________________________________________________________________ DATE : 15/06/2009 HARDWARE PLATFORM(S) : / OPERATING SYSTEM(S) : OpenSolaris running CUPS. ====================================================================== http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/printfriendly.do?assetkey=1-66-261088-1 ______________________________________________________________________ Solution Type: Sun Alert Solution 261088 : Multiple Security Vulnerabilities in Common UNIX Printing System (CUPS) May Allow a Remote User to Execute Arbitrary Code Bug ID: 6765712 Product OpenSolaris Date of Resolved Release: 10-Jun-2009 SA Document Body Multiple Security Vulnerabilities in Common UNIX Printing System (CUPS) May Allow a Remote User to Execute Arbitrary Code 1. Impact The Common UNIX Printing System (CUPS) as shipped with OpenSolaris is impacted by multiple security vulnerabilities affecting the "imagetops", "texttops" and "hpgltops" filters. These vulnerabilities may allow a local or remote unprivileged user to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the CUPS service (which usually runs as root). These issues are described in the following documents: CVE-2008-3639 at http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2008-3639 CVE-2008-3640 at http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2008-3640 CVE-2008-3641 at http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2008-3641 http://www.cups.org/str.php?L2918 http://www.cups.org/str.php?L2919 http://www.cups.org/str.php?L2911 2. Contributing Factors These issues can occur in the following releases: SPARC Platform: * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_87 through snv_102 x86 Platform: * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_87 through snv_102 Notes: 1. Solaris 8, 9, and 10 are not impacted by these issues. OpenSolaris distributions may include additional bug fixes above and beyond the build from which it was derived. The base build can be derived as follows: $ uname -v snv_101 2. These vulnerabilities only affect systems which are configured to use the CUPS software. This can be determined by checking the status of the appropriate SMF (smf(5)) service as in the following example: % svcs application/cups/in-lpd STATE STIME FMRI enabled Mar_19 svc:/application/cups/in-lpd:default 3. A system is only vulnerable to a remote user while sharing a printer(s) on the network. To determine if a printer is being network shared, the following command can be run: # grep Listen /etc/cups/cupsd.conf Listen localhost:631 Listen /var/run/cups/cups.sock In the case above, it is listening only on the local interfaces. 3. Symptoms There are no predictable symptoms that would indicate the described issues have been exploited. 4. Workaround There is no workaround for these issues. Please see the "Resolution" section below. 5. Resolution These issues are addressed in the following releases: SPARC Platform: * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_103 or later x86 Platform: * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_103 or later For more information on Security Sun Alerts, see Technical Instruction ID 213557.
