===================================================================== CERT-Renater Note d'Information No. 2009/VULN219 _____________________________________________________________________ DATE : 05/06/2009 HARDWARE PLATFORM(S) : / OPERATING SYSTEM(S) : Systems running Sun Java System Web Server 6.1. ====================================================================== http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/printfriendly.do?assetkey=1-66-259588-1 ______________________________________________________________________ Solution Type: Sun Alert Solution 259588 : Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) Vulnerability in the Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 Reverse Proxy Plug-in Bug ID: 6754095 Product Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 Date of Resolved Release: 03-Jun-2009 SA Document Body Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) Vulnerability in the Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 Reverse Proxy Plug-in 1. Impact A Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) security vulnerability in the Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 Reverse Proxy Plug-in may allow a local or remote unprivileged user to execute arbitrary script or HTML within a user's browser which can lead to hijacked sessions, stolen cookie information, and a loss of data privacy between a client and the server. 2. Contributing Factors This issue can occur in the following releases: SPARC Platform * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 without Service Pack 11 * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 without patch 116648-23 x86 Platform * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 without Service Pack 11 * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 without patch 116649-23 Linux * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 without Service Pack 11 * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 without patch 118202-15 Windows * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 without Service Pack 11 * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 without patch 121524-07 HP-UX * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 without Service Pack 11 * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 without patch 121510-07 AIX * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 without Service Pack 11 Note: Sun Java System Web Server 7.0 is not impacted by this issue. To determine the version of Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 on a system, the following command can be run: $ /https-/start -version Sun Microsystems, Inc. Sun ONE Web Server 6.1SP11 B05/13/2009 10:52 (Where is the installation directory of the Web Server and should be the actual host name on which the Web Server is installed). This issue only affects Web Server installations which are making use of the Reverse Proxy Plug-in. To determine if this plug-in is in use on a host, the 'magnus.conf' configuration file can be examined, searching for the 'libpassthrough.so' entry. This file is stored in the 'config' directory within the root directory of each Web Server instance installation. For example: # cd /config # grep "libpassthrough.so" magnus.conf Init fn="load-modules" shlib="/libpassthrough.so" 3. Symptoms There are no predictable symptoms that would indicate the described issue has been exploited to execute arbitrary script or HTML on the system. 4. Workaround There is no workaround for this issue. Please see the Resolution section below. 5. Resolution This issue is addressed in the following releases: SPARC Platform * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 with Service Pack 11 or later * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 with patch 116648-23 or later x86 Platform * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 with Service Pack 11 or later * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 with patch 116649-23 or later Linux * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 with Service Pack 11 or later * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 with patch 118202-15 or later Windows * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 with Service Pack 11 or later * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 with patch 121524-07 or later HP-UX * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 with Service Pack 11 or later * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 with patch 121510-07 or later AIX * Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 with Service Pack 11 or later Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 Service Pack 11 is available from the Sun Download Center at: https://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_SMI-Site /en_US/-/USD/ViewProductDetail-Start?ProductRef=SJWS-6.1-SP11-OTH-G-F@ CDS-CDS_SMI For more information on Security Sun Alerts, see Technical Instruction ID 213557.
