Impact A security vulnerability in Sun Java System Directory Server may allow a local or remote unprivileged user to create specifically crafted LDAP requests that would crash the directory server process. This is a type of Denial of Service (DoS). 2. Contributing Factors This issue can occur in the following releases for all platforms (Solaris 8, 9, and 10 for SPARC and x86 Platforms, Linux, Windows, HP-UX, and AIX): PatchZIP (Compressed Archive) and Native package versions: * Sun Java System Directory Server 5.2 * Sun Java System Directory Server 5.2 Patch2 * Sun Java System Directory Server 5.2 Patch3 * Sun Java System Directory Server 5.2 Patch4 * Sun Java System Directory Server 5.2 Patch6 without 'Sun LDAP C SDK' patches 116837-04, 116838-04, 118353-04, 140608-01, 138135-01, 138136-01, 138137-01, 138138-01, 138139-01, or 138140-01 (see "Resolution" section). Note: Sun Java System Directory Server 6.x is not affected by this issue. To determine the version of Sun Java System Directory Server running on a system, the following command can be run: On Solaris, Linux, HP-UX, and AIX systems: $ cd /bin/slapd/server $ ./ns-slapd -V -D Sun Java(TM) System Directory Server/5.2 On 64-bit Solaris: $ cd /bin/slapd/server/64 $ ./ns-slapd -V -D Sun Java(TM) System Directory Server/5.2 On 64-bit HP-UX: $ cd /bin/slapd/server/pa20_64 $ ./ns-slapd -V -D Sun Java(TM) System Directory Server/5.2 On Windows systems: >cd /bin/slapd/server >slapd.exe -V -D 3. Symptoms If this issue is exploited, the Directory Server may crash, resulting in the service no longer being available. 4. Workaround There is no workaround for this issue. Please see the Resolution section below. 5. Resolution This issue is addressed in the following releases for all platforms (Solaris 8, 9, and 10 on Solaris SPARC and Solaris x86 Platforms, Linux, Windows, HP-UX, and AIX): The patch for shared component "Sun LDAP C SDK" needs to be applied, depending on the install format and the platform: Native Packages versions: Sun Java System Directory Server 5.2 (including Patches 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 or later), as delivered in the following: * Solaris SPARC: patch 116837-04 or later * Solaris X86: patch 116838-04 or later * Linux: patch 118353-04 or later * Windows: patch 140608-01 or later PatchZIP (Compressed Archive) Versions: Sun Java System Directory Server 5.2 (including Patches 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 or later), as delivered in the following: * Solaris SPARC: patch 138135-01 or later * Solaris x86: patch 138136-01 or later * Linux: patch 138137-01 or later * Windows: patch 138138-01 or later * HP-UX: patch 138139-01 or later * AIX: patch 138140-01 or later For more information on Security Sun Alerts, see Technical Instruction ID 213557.
