    Solution Type: Sun Alert
    Solution 241646 : Security Vulnerability in GNU tar May Lead to
    Arbitrary Code Execution or Denial of Service (DoS)
    Bug ID: 6407045

    Product
    Solaris 9 Operating System
    Solaris 10 Operating System
    OpenSolaris

    Date of Workaround Release: 08-Sep-2008

    SA Document Body
    Security vulnerability in the GNU tar utility (see gtar(1)):

    1. Impact
    A security vulnerability in the GNU tar utility (see gtar(1)) bundled
    with Solaris 9 and Solaris 10 may allow a local or remote unprivileged
    user who provides a specially crafted tar archive to cause the
    execution of arbitrary code or a program crash. The ability to cause a
    program crash is a type of Denial of Service (DoS).
    Additional information regarding this issue is available at:
      * CVE-2006-0300 at:
        http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-0300

    2. Contributing Factors
    This issue can occur in the following releases:
    SPARC Platform
      * Solaris 9 with patch 118191-01
      * Solaris 10 without patch 139099-01
      * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_01 through snv_80

    x86 Platform
      * Solaris 9 with patch 118192-01
      * Solaris 10 without patch 139100-01
      * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_01 through snv_80

    Note 1: Solaris 8 does not include support for GNU tar utility and is
    not impacted by this issue.
    Note 2: OpenSolaris distributions may include additional bug fixes
    above and beyond the build from which it was derived.
    To determine the base build of OpenSolaris, the following command can
    be used:
     $ uname -v
     snv_86

    3. Symptoms
    There are no predictable symptoms that would indicate the described
    issue has been exploited on a system.

     4. Workaround
    Until the patches for this issue can be applied, users should avoid
    using gtar(1) with archives from untrusted sources.

     5. Resolution
    This issue is addressed in the following releases:
    SPARC Platform
      * Solaris 10 with patch 139099-01 or later
      * OpenSolaris based upon build snv_81 or later

    x86 Platform
      * Solaris 10 with patch 139100-01 or later
      * OpenSolaris based upon build snv_81 or later

    A final resolution is pending completion for Solaris 9.
