      * Sun Alert ID: 103160
      * Synopsis: Security Vulnerabilities in libtiff(3) May Allow Denial
        of Service (DoS) or Privilege Elevation
      * Category: Security
      * Product: Solaris 9 Operating System, Solaris 10 Operating System,
        Solaris 8 Operating System
      * BugIDs: 6451119
      * Avoidance: Patch, Workaround
      * State: Workaround

      * Date Modified:

1. Impact

    Multiple security vulnerabilities exist in the Tag Image File format
    library (libtiff(3)) which may affect applications making use of this
    library. Depending on the individual application, these
    vulnerabilities may allow a local or remote unprivileged user to cause
    a Denial of Service (DoS) to the application, or to execute arbitrary
    code with the privileges of the application.

    These issues are described in the following documents:
      * CVE-2006-3459 at:
        http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-3459
      * CVE-2006-3460 at:
        http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-3460
      * CVE-2006-3461 at:
        http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-3461
      * CVE-2006-3462 at:
        http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-3462
      * CVE-2006-3463 at:
        http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-3463
      * CVE-2006-2193 at:
        http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-2193
      * CVE-2006-3464 at:
        http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-3464
      * CVE-2006-3465 at:
        http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-3465

    Sun acknowledges with thanks, Travis Ormandy from the Google Security
    Team for reporting these issues.

2. Contributing Factors

    These issues can occur in the following releases:

    SPARC Platform
      * Solaris 8
      * Solaris 9
      * Solaris 10 without patch 119900-04

    x86 Platform
      * Solaris 8
      * Solaris 9
      * Solaris 10 without patch 119901-04

3. Symptoms

    If the described issues have been exploited to cause a Denial of
    Service (DoS), the affected application will crash, potentially
    leaving a core file depending on the system configuration.

    There are no predictable symptoms that would indicate that these
    issues have been exploited to execute arbitrary code.

4. Relief/Workaround

    To work around the described issues, only load images from trusted
    sources.

5. Resolution

    This issue is addressed in the following release:

    SPARC Platform
      * Solaris 10 with patch 119900-04 or later

    x86 Platform
      * Solaris 10 with patch 119901-04 or later

    A final resolution is pending completion for Solaris 8 and Solaris 9.
