Patch available for ColdFusion MX 7 cross-site scripting protection bypass

Release date: March 13, 2007

Vulnerability identifier: APSB07-06

CVE number: CVE-2006-6483

Platform: All platforms

Affected software versions: ColdFusion MX 7.X

Summary

A potential vulnerability in ColdFusion could allow an attacker to bypass
ColdFusion's cross-site scripting protection. This issue will not occur if a
sitewide error handler is defined in the settings page of ColdFusion
administrator. A specially crafted URL sent to the ColdFusion server could
result in the attacker being able to conduct cross site scripting attacks.

Solution

Adobe recommends ColdFusion users apply the following update using the
installation instructions below.

NOTE: As always, test the changes in a non-production environment before
applying the changes to production servers.

To install:

    1. Update to ColdFusion MX 7.0.2, if currently running ColdFusionMX 7.0 or
ColdFusion MX 7.0.1
    2. Download and unzip the hot fix. (19K)
    3. Open the ColdFusion MX Administrator and select the System Information
page. Next to the Update File field, either:
       a. Type in the file path and click Submit.
       OR
       b. Click the Browse button, browse to the downloaded file, select the
file and then Apply.
    4. Restart ColdFusion MX.

The ColdFusion MX 7 hot fix JAR file does not need to be retained after
installing it with the ColdFusion Administrator. The file has been copied into
the correct location. The ColdFusion MX 7 hot fix JAR file will appear as a new
entry in the System Information list.

Severity rating

Adobe categorizes this as a moderate issue and recommends affected users patch
their installations.

Details

A potential vulnerability in ColdFusion could allow an attacker to bypass
ColdFusion's cross-site scripting protection. This issue will not occur if a
sitewide error handler is defined in the settings page of ColdFusion
administrator. A specially crafted URL sent to the ColdFusion server could
result in the attacker being able to conduct cross site scripting attacks
against users of Internet Explorer. This issue is remotely exploitable. This
issue does not apply to ColdFusion MX 6.X.
