Multiple Vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash Player 8.0.24.0 and Earlier Versions

Release Date: September 12, 2006

Vulnerability Identifier: APSB06-11

CVE Number: CVE-2006-3014, CVE-2006-3311,
             CVE-2006-3587, CVE-2006-3588,
             CVE-2006-4640

Platform: All Platforms

Summary:

Critical vulnerabilities have been identified in Flash Player 8.0.24.0
and earlier versions that could allow an attacker who successfully
exploits these vulnerabilities to take control of the affected system.
A malicious SWF file must be loaded in Flash Player by the end user for
an attacker to exploit these vulnerabilities. It is recommended that
users update to the most current version of Flash Player available for
         their platform.

Solution:

Adobe recommends all users of Flash Player 8.0.24.0 and earlier
versions upgrade to the newest version 9.0.16.0, by downloading
it from the Player Download Center, or by using the auto-update
mechanism within the product when prompted.

For customers who cannot upgrade to Flash Player 9, please refer to the
         Flash Player update TechNote.

Adobe provides a free license for redistributing Flash Player on
company intranets or with other software products and services.
For more information and to apply for a license, please use the online
         application.

If you are unable to follow Adobes guidance in the Flash Player update
TechNote or cannot move to a more recent version of Flash Player,
please contact the Adobe Security Team at PSIRT@adobe.com for
         assistance with this update.

Affected Software Versions

Adobe Flash Player 8.0.24 and Earlier

To verify the Flash Player version number, access the About Flash
Player page, or right-click on Flash content and select About
Macromedia Flash Player from the menu. If you use multiple browsers,
perform the check and the installation for each browser.

Severity Rating

Adobe categorizes this as a critical update and recommends affected
         users upgrade to version 9.0.16.0.

Details

Multiple input validation errors have been identified in Flash Player
8.0.24.0 and earlier versions that could lead to the potential
execution of arbitrary code. These vulnerabilities could be accessed
through content delivered from a remote location via the users web
browser, email client, or other applications that include or reference
         the Flash Player. (CVE-2006-3311, CVE-2006-3587, CVE-2006-3588)

These updates include changes to prevent circumvention of the
         allowScriptAccess option. (CVE-2006-4640)

These updates also include changes to the way the Flash Player 7 and
Flash Player 8 ActiveX control behaves when invoked by Microsoft
Office products on the Windows platform. These changes are similar to
ones introduced in Flash Player 9. (CVE-2006-3014)

Flash Player 8 update (8.0.33.0), and Flash Player 7 update (7.0.66.0
or 7.0.68.0) address security vulnerabilities in previous versions of
Flash Player. Updated versions of Flash Player 7 for Linux and Solaris,
which contain fixes for these vulnerabilities, are also available from
         the Adobe Player Download Center.
