Impact A security vulnerability in Sun Grid Engine 5.3 and Sun N1 Grid Engine 6.0 may allow a local unprivileged user the ability to shut down the grid service, or use the grid service even if access was denied. 2. Contributing Factors This issue can occur in the following releases: SPARC Platform * Sun Grid Engine 5.3 (32-bit Solaris) * Sun Grid Engine 5.3 (64-bit Solaris) * Sun Grid Engine 5.3 (32-bit Solaris) NON-Solaris Package format * Sun Grid Engine 5.3 (64-bit Solaris) NON-Solaris Package format * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (32-bit Solaris) without patch 123037-01 * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (64-bit Solaris) without patch 123038-01 * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (32-bit Solaris) NON-Solaris Package format without patch 123041-01 * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (64-bit Solaris) NON-Solaris Package format without patch 123042-01 x86 Platform * Sun Grid Engine 5.3 * Sun Grid Engine 5.3 NON-Solaris Package format * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 without patch 123039-01 * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 NON-Solaris Package format without patch 123043-01 * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (x64) without patch 123040-01 * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (x64) NON-Solaris Package format without patch 123044-01 Linux * Sun Grid Engine 5.3 * Sun Grid Engine 5.3 (x64) * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 without patch 123045-01 * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (x64) without patch 123046-01 Windows * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 without patch 123052-01 HP-UX * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 without patch 123050-01 AIX * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (for AIX 4.3) without patch 123047-01 * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (for AIX 5.1) without patch 123048-01 MAC OS * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 without patch 123049-01 IRIX * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (for IRIX 6.5) without patch 123051-01 The described issue only occurs on systems configured in Certificate Security Protocol (CSP) mode. To determine if a system is configured in CSP mode, the following command can be used: $ grep security_mode $SGE_ROOT/default/common/bootstrap If a system is configured in CSP mode, the output of the above command will indicate "security_mode csp". 3. Symptoms There are no predictable symptoms that would indicate the above described issues have been exploited. 4. Relief/Workaround There is no workaround. Please see the "Resolution" section below. 5. Resolution This issue is addressed in the following releases: SPARC Platform * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (32-bit Solaris) with patch 123037-01 or later * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (64-bit Solaris) with patch 123038-01 or later * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (32-bit Solaris) NON-Solaris Package format with patch 123041-01 or later * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (64-bit Solaris) NON-Solaris Package format with patch 123042-01 or later x86 Platform * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 with patch 123039-01 or later * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 NON-Solaris Package format with patch 123043-01 or later * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (x64) with patch 123040-01 or later * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (x64) NON-Solaris Package format with patch 123044-01 or later Linux * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 with patch 123045-01 or later * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (x64) with patch 123046-01 or later Windows * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 with patch 123052-01 or later HP-UX * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 with patch 123050-01 or later AIX * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (for AIX 4.3) with patch 123047-01 or later * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (for AIX 5.1) with patch 123048-01 or later MAC OS * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 with patch 123049-01 or later IRIX * N1 Grid Engine 6.0 (for IRIX 6.5) with patch 123051-01 or later Note: Sun Grid Engine 5.3 will require an upgrade to N1 Grid Engine 6.0 with the appropriate patches to resolve this issue.
