                          SGI Security Advisory

Title : Samba Security Vulnerability
Number : 20041201-01-P
Date : December 7, 2004
Reference: CAN-2004-0807, CAN-2004-0882 & CAN-2004-0930
Reference: SGI BUGS 925753, 925907 & 925754
Fixed in : Patch 5798 for Samba 3.0.7
______________________________________________________________________________

- -----------------------
- --- Issue Specifics ---
- -----------------------

It has been reported that there are multiple vulnerabilities in Samba a
ffecting Samba 3.0.x <= 3.0.7. There is a potential exploit and
denial of service against Samba.

Patch 5798 patch applies ONLY to Samba 3.0.7. Customers with older
Samba versions should upgrade to 3.0.7 and apply this patch.

See: http://www.samba.org/samba/ftp/patches/security/

SGI has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for
neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures
be implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems.

These issues have been corrected in future releases of Samba and with a
patch for SGI's Samba 3.0.7.

- --------------
- --- Impact ---
- --------------

Samba for Irix is not installed by default on IRIX 6.5 systems. It is an
optional product that can be purchased and installed as "samba_irix".

To determine the version of IRIX you are running, execute the following
command:

   # /bin/uname -R

That will return a result similar to the following:

   # 6.5 6.5.22m

The first number ("6.5") is the release name, the second ("6.5.22" in
this
case) is the extended release name. The extended release name is the
"version" we refer to throughout this document.

To see if Samba is installed, execute the following command:

% versions samba_irix
I = Installed, R = Removed

    Name Date Description

I samba_irix 10/06/2004 Samba 3.0.7 for IRIX
I samba_irix.books 10/06/2004 Samba Online Books
I samba_irix.books.Samba_IAG 10/06/2004 Samba for IRIX(R) Installation
                                            and Administration Guide
I samba_irix.man 10/06/2004 Samba Online Documentation
I samba_irix.man.doc 10/06/2004 Samba 3.0.7 Documentation and Examples
I samba_irix.man.manpages 10/06/2004 Samba 3.0.7 Man Pages
I samba_irix.man.relnotes 10/06/2004 Samba 3.0.7 Release Notes
I samba_irix.src 10/06/2004 Samba Source Code
I samba_irix.src.samba 10/06/2004 Samba 3.0.7 Source Code
I samba_irix.sw 10/06/2004 Samba Execution Environment
I samba_irix.sw.base 10/06/2004 Samba 3.0.7 Execution Environment
I samba_irix.sw.pcp 10/06/2004 Samba 3.0.7 Performance Co-Pilot PMDA

If the result is similar to the above and the version shown is Samba
3.0.X <= 3.0.7 then the system is vulnerable.
Note: This will show the same thing after the patch is installed as well.

- ----------------------------
- --- Temporary Workaround ---
- ----------------------------

SGI recommends installing patch 5798 on IRIX system running 6.5.22
or higher with Samba 3.0.7.

- ----------------
- --- Solution ---
- ----------------

SGI has provided a patch for Samba 3.0.7 for this vulnerability. Our
recommendation is to the patch.

OS Version Vulnerable? Patch # Other Actions
