A. Background

The SSRT thanks Davide Del Vecchio for
reporting this potential vulnerability to HP.

HP Tru64 UNIX is not vulnerable to this reported problem.

B. Recommended solution

   11.00 - Install PHCO_24723 or subsequent. PHCO_24723 has been
superseded. To find the recommended superseding patch
and the latest superseding patch, search the technical
knowledge base on itrc.hp.com for "PHCO_24723".

10.20 - Download and install libc.1.10.20 as described below.

Note: This libc.1.10.20 also has the fixes for the potential
         vulnerabilities mentioned in HPSBUX0208-209 and
         HPSBUX0303-252.

    System: hprc.external.hp.com (192.170.19.51)
    Login: rexec
    Password: rexec

    Browser ftp access:

      ftp://rexec:rexec@hprc.external.hp.com/
      ftp://rexec:rexec@192.170.19.51/

Note: There is an ftp defect in IE5 that may result in
a browser hang. To work around this:
Select Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced
Un-check the option: [ ] Enable folder view for FTP sites

If you wish to verify the md5 sum please refer to:

              HPSBUX9408-016
Patch sums and the MD5 program

Download libc.1.10.20.gz and unpack with gunzip.

Verify the cksum or md5 sum.

    cksum:
    2506697268 1867776 libc.1.10.20

    MD5 (libc.1.10.20) = cabd081cee3e980d7f3075bb7c6a505d

    Go to init state 2

     #DIR=[path to new libc.1]

     #cd /usr/lib
     #cp libc.1 libc.1.orig
     #cp $DIR/libc.1.10.20 libc.1.new
     #chown bin libc.1.new
     #chgrp bin libc.1.new
     #chmod 555 libc.1.new
     #/sbin/mv libc.1 was.libc.1
     #/sbin/mv libc.1.new libc.1
